Trampled by Turtles – “Christmas in Prison”
Jone Prine’s “Christmas in Prison” is a go to cover for Americana, country and bluegrass bands each year – we like this version from Trampled by Turtles
Sara Watkins – “The Holidays With You” Sara Watkins adds a touch of ukulele to Christmas with her track “The Holidays With You”.
David Brent & Foregone Conclusion – “Don’t Cry It’s Christmas”
Ok, this isn’t folk. But you have to agree that Ricky Gervais’ David Brent owns the Christmas number one with “Don’t Cry It’s Christmas”
She & Him – “Christmas Memories” She & Him are determined to corner the indie market each and every year and their 2016 track “Christmas Memories” is another gem.
Ange Hardy – “Mary’s Robin” Ange Hardy released a double A side for Christmas and both tracks – “The Quantock Carol” and “Mary’s Robin” – are magnificent. We chose “Mary’s Robin” because most other outlets are chosing the former.
The Gothard Sisters – “Christmas Flower”
Tightly polished Irish folk music at its best.

– Swedish singer-songwriter José González released his new single “Leaf Off/The Cave”. Details here
Interviews
“On an afternoon when frying eggs on the pavement in rural Queensland was definitely an option, Bill Quinn spoke with Ann from her sick bed in Edmonton, as she was putting the final touches on her tour, and readying to hop on a plane the following week” – Ann Vriend chats to Bill Quinn. “As we emerge from the haze of the Christmas and New Year period I can tell you right now that the future is looking bright indeed. So many of our favourite artists spent last year in the studio and the next six months is going to be thick with exciting releases. With so much good music on the way I thought I’d try and distill a list of ten artists that I’m excited to hear from in the first half of this year. This list is by no means exhaustive and I could probably spend hours talking about every release on the calendar, but hopefully this gives you a jumping off point to get as excited as I am for 2015” – Gareth Hugh Evans picks his ten artists to watch in the first half of 2015. Find out who he chose and why here
“Here’s a question, though: how many have been to a small regional folk festival? … I ask this because I believe it is important for the folk movement that people younger than me – which is lot of people – get involved in the smaller festivals, either through volunteering, applying to perform, just turning up and doing a blackboard, or paying the usually small amount to attend” – guest contributor Peter Logue recounts the joy of the small folk festival. Read about it here
Black Market Tune was a highlight at this year’s Illawarra Folk Festival so I urge anyone who hasn’t seen them live yet to get along to one of their shows. This week they’ll be bringing their uniquely European take on Scottish traditional music to Victoria – see them before they leave the country!

Friday Folk Flashback
“Shady Grove” – Crooked Still
Someone pointed out to me this week that old timey/bluegrass standard “Shady Grove” is likely derived from the English ballad “Matty Groves” and my mind was blown. How could I not have noticed this before? Now I can’t think about/sing either song without getting it mixed up with the other.

Friday Folk Flashback
“Cam Ye O’er Frae France” – Steeleye Span
I’ve been listening a lot to Bellowhead’s new album Revival and noticed that their instrumental “Jack Lintel’s Jig” (which is actually a hornpipe) is basically the same tune as “Cam Ye O’er Frae France”, which in turn sent me down a Youtube rabbit hole listening to different versions of the Jacobite song. This was probably my favourite, and there’s not much that beats Steeleye Span live (and Maddy Prior dancing!)
The brand new Trampled By Turtles album Wild Animals is released this week and they’ve also treated us to a brand new video of the title track. Staring none other than Har Mar Supertstar, the video for “Wild Animals” was directed by Philip Harder. Check it out below:

Friday Folk Flashback
“Better Way” – Ben Harper
I’ve always said that one of the positives that comes out of having a government as divisive as the one Australia has right now is that it motivates the previously politically apathetic to take a stand. And one of the best ways to vent our frustration at the political process is through music. I believe in a better way.
The latest single from newgrass five-piece Trampled By Turtles is “Wild Animals”, which debuted online last week. The single is taken from Trampled By Turtles’ upcoming album of the the same name, Wild Animals.
“We all tried to come into this thing extremely open-minded,” guitarist and vocalist Dave Simonett told Paste Magazine. “How can we sound new to ourselves? I feel like the sound has changed and is changing, especially from [2010 album] Palomino to now. A lot of our reputation from even just a couple years ago was that we were this fast band, which we can do, and we do that. But this record focused a little bit more on other aspects of our playing together.”
Wild Animals is due for release on the 15th July. Listen to “Wild Animals” below:
