Katie Brianna and Caitlin Harnett Cover Karl Broadie’s “Drink The Whole Bottle Down”

Katie and Caitlin

Last year Australia’s top musicians came together to pay tribute to the late Karl Broadie with amazing album Leave On A Light: The Songs Of Karl Broadie.

Broadie, who lost his battle with cancer in April last year, was a mentor to so many musicians in Sydney and watching the local community rally around him was a real inspiration.

Sydney Americana artists Katie Brianna and Caitlin Harnett have just released a video of their version of Karl Broadie’s “Drink The Whole Bottle Down” from Leave On A Light: The Songs Of Karl Broadie. The video was shot by Lyn Taylor – check it out below:

Old Crow Medicine Show Announce Bob Dylan Tribute Album

Old Crow

Last May Old Crow Medicine Show took to the stage at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville to perform a tribute to Bob Dylan’s classic album Blonde On Blonde. Now, to celebrate signing to Columbia Nashville, Old Crow Medicine Show will be releasing a recording of the concert as 50 Years Of Blonde On Blonde on the 28th April this year.

Old Crow Medicine Show have a long association with the music of Bob Dylan having turned two of his bootlegs into fan favourite songs – “Wagon Wheel” and “Sweet Amarillo”.

To get a taste of 50 Years Of Blonde On Blonde check out Old Crow Medicine Show’s “invasion” of the Sony Music Nashville offices while they sing “”Everybody Must Get Stoned”.

“This Train Is Bound For Glory” – Mumford and Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show & Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Johnny Flynn Unveils New Single “Heart Sunk Hank”

Johnny Flynn

English singer-songwriter and actor Johnny Flynn has unveiled the latest single from his upcoming album Sillion (due on the 24th March), the stripped back “Heart Sunk Hank”.

The production on the track is interesting – kicking off as a wonky vinyl recording (courtesy of a 1940s Voice-o-Graph), moving into a live sound and then descending back in the wonkiness. The track is inspired by the folk song “Ten Thousand Miles”.

“There’s a version of that song by Nic Jones that I really love,” explains Flynn. “His version is really pure and beautiful and trembling with authenticity. But I played it to my wife and she hated it. And it made me laugh: how can it be that this person that I love hates this song?”

Check out “Heart Sunk Hank” below:

Watch the new Handsome Young Strangers Video “Fisherman’s Blues”

For their new single Sydney folk-punks Handsome Young Strangers have broken their own unwritten rule of only playing Australian songs by covering The Waterboys’ classic track “Fisherman’s Blues”.

The track is taken from Handsome Young Strangers’ latest EP Battle Of Broken Hill. The accompanying video for “Fisherman’s Blues” features footage from a bunch of recent live shows – check it out below:

The Summer Hill Folk Festival Returns for 2017

Summer Hill

One of my most unexpected favourite gigs last year was the inaugural Summer Hill Folk Festival in Sydney. Set in the Summer Hill Church, the event featured a wide breadth of folk acts in an acoustically perfect setting – it was such a magic day.

The Summer Hill Folk Festival has announced its return in 2017 with a lineup of 13 different acts over the course of a single Saturday. Headlining this year will be local legends Brian Campeau, Timothy James Bowen and Bonniesongs who will be joined by a who’s who of Timber and Steel favourites including Whoa Mule!, Queen Porter Stomp, Fresh Off The Boat, Richard Ashby Duo, Giffen, The Squeezebox Trio, Chaika and Burrows.

The day will also feature Irish Dancing, a couple of workshops and a tribute to Simon & Garfunkel from the Summer Hill Community Choir.

Artisan markets, food and drink stalls and kids activities will be happening in and around the Summer Hill Church from 11am and best of all the whole thing is free. The event is also alcohol and smoke free.

The Summer Hill Folk Festival takes place on Saturday 4th March from 11am. For more information check out the official Facebook event here.

The full program for the day is below:

11:30am – Whoa Mule! (Old-timey/Appalachian)
12:00pm – Queen Porter Stomp (Gypsy Jazz)
12:30pm – Bonniesongs (New folk/songwriter)
1:00pm – Fresh Off The Boat (Traditional Irish)
1:30pm – Timothy James Bowen (Singer Songwriter)
2:00pm – Richard Ashby Duo (Gypsy Guitars)
2:30pm – Giffen (Indi Country Folk)
2:30pm – Irish Dance Workshop
3:30pm – Summer Hill Community Choir sing Simon and Garfunkel
4:15pm – Vocal workshop with Giffen Choral
5:00pm – The Squeezebox Trio (Gypsy)
6:00pm – Brian Campeau (Solo Folk/Singer Songwriter)
6:30pm – Irish Ceili Dance
7:00pm – Chaika (World)
8:00pm – Burrows (New Folk)

Watch the New Laura Marling Video “Next Time”

Laura Marling

Laura Marling has just released the track “Next Time” – the third song from her upcoming album Semper Femina (due on the 10th March) and the second time Marling has stepped into the directing chair.

“Next Time” has a real Nick Drake quality to it. The video is once again visually arresting and shows off Marling as an accomplished visual storyteller.

Check out the video for “Next Time” below:
