The festival announcement all fans of Americana and alt-country have been waiting for is here. At midnight last night the full lineup for Out On The Weekend 2016 dropped and it’s huge.

The headliner this year is New Zealand’s own Marlon Williams & the Yarra Benders who have been garnering a heap of buzz in both Australia and overseas. Out On The Weekend will be Williams’ only Melbourne performance for the rest of 2016 so it’s bound to be a very special gig.

In terms of overseas artists Out On The Weekend boasts Robert Ellis (USA), Lindi Ortega (CAN), Joe Pug (USA), Joshua Hedley (USA) and The Cactus Blossoms (USA). On the local front it’s a who’s who of Timber and Steel favourites including Cash Savage & The Last Drinks, All Our Exes Live In Texas, Tracy McNeil & The GoodLife, Bakersfield Glee Club and The Stetson Family.

Finally the festival coincides with the 20th anniversary of Denise Hyland’s Twang programme on 3RRR community radio and to celebrate the show will be broadcasting live from the main stage.

Out On The Weekend takes place at Seaworks, Williamstown  in Melbourne on 15th October. Tickets are on sale from this Friday 29th July – check out the official site for more information. The full lineup is below:

James Kenyon Announces New Album Imagine You Are Driving

Adelaide based singer-songwriter James Kenyon has announced plans to release his brand new album Imagine You Are Driving on the 2nd September this year. The album is a followup to Kenyon’s amazing 2012 debut The North Pole.

“I pitched the idea for the album to [producer] Nick Huggins whist kicking a footy around,” James Kenyon explained. “I wanted to make a soundtrack to an unmade film. The “film” was really just a shifting set of images and songs I’d been thinking about over the past few years – a collection of loosely connected narratives based around a small town or an outer suburban area that reverberated through the songs. It didn’t matter that the plot for the “film” wasn’t locked down, what mattered was that we had an idea of the textures, colours and landscape of the film; enough information to inform the music.”

James Kenyon released the first single from the album, “The Motorbike Song”, back on May and is currently touring it throughout the country – check out the full list of dates and the video for “The Motorbike Song” below:

Legendary bush band The Bushwackers have just released their brand new single and video “Leave It In The Ground”. Folk music and the protest movement have long been interlinked and The Bushwackers are adding to that tradition with this track, protesting the take over of farming and rural landscapes for the profit of mining and energy companies.

When she’s not staring in her friend’s music videos Sydney singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin produces some pretty special music.

Jacklin’s latest single is “Leadlight”, the video to which was filmed in her old high school hall.

“A lot of the shots focus on the stage where I performed in the chorus for Grease and Fiddler on the Roof and the unfortunate time I chose to sing “Wonderwall” to a backing CD for a senior assembly,” Julia Jacklin explained. “I went back there recently and saw the hall in a whole new light. When I was at school I never really thought about it, it was just a boring school hall that I was forced to sit in for long assemblies and exams. Now I think it’s a really beautiful space.”

“Leadlight” is the latest taste of Julia Jacklin’s upcoming debut album. Titled Don’t Let The Kids Win the album is due for release on the 7th October. Here’s the full tracklist:

The Mullum Music Festival has long been held up as one of the country’s best and it has a long history supporting of folk, country, roots and Americana artists throughout the years.

It looks like 2016 is going to be another cracking festival with the first round of artists announced today. The lineup includes plenty of Timber and Steel friendly music including Eilen Jewell (above), The Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer, Julien Baker, Henry Wagons & The Only Children, Matt Andersen, Suzannah Espie, William Crighton, Lior, Bobby Alu and the Palm Royale, Sahara Beck, Hat Fitz & Cara, Jordie Lane and many more.

The Mullum Music Festival takes place in the northern NSW town of Mullumbimby from the 17th to 20th November. Tickets are already on sales – check the official site for details.
