Friday Folk Flashback

“Ain’t It Enough” – Old Crow Medicine Show

Listen to the New Julia Jacklin Single “Cold Caller”

Indie singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin has just released yet another stunning single, this time the track “Cold Caller”.

The track has been released as a double a-side with Jacklin’s previous single “Eastwick” and is available as a limited release 7” vinyl.

“I started writing this song when my older sister told me she was pregnant,” Julia Jacklin explained. “I know people get pregnant all the time but this was different, this was my sister. The one who explained tampons to me, told me what kissing felt like, convinced mum to let me shave my legs, sung “Boys of Summer” a cappella at the school talent quest.

“I went to New Zealand to record this seven inch and on the first day she went into labour, I was checking my phone every 10 mins but managed to write the second part of the song. That night I had all these crazy nightmares, where she kept disappearing into the dark and every time I caught up to her she’d slip out of my hands again. Woke up in an absolute state to the news that she had given birth to a healthy baby boy. I went into the studio and recorded this song. So this is for her, my wonderful sister Emma.”

Take a listen to “Cold Caller” below:

Watch the New Katie Harder Live Video “Beloved”

Katie Harder

Last week Alice Springs based singer-songwriter Katie Harder released her beautiful new EP Beloved. The EP focuses on Harder’s experience in Central Australia, her family and the recent passing of her father and was recorded when she was 8 months pregnant.

“It was one of those time pressed things as I was working around the band and my own family, plus I was having a baby in 6 weeks and it could potentially stop the whole recording process,” Katie Harder explained. “But, funny thing is, when you’re pregnant you have different hormones pumping through your body and your ligaments become loose, including your vocal chords. So when I’m pregnant I find I sing with the most ease and control of any other time of my life (though I’m a bit extra short of breath). This is what is also captured in this recording.”

The lead single from the EP is the title track “Beloved” about the need to give rather than get.

“I thought “what if this was turned on its head and songs were written that encouraged people to prioritise giving rather then getting,” Harder said of the track. “Imagine what would change in relationships and society as a whole. I even tried it in my own relationship and the difference was amazing.”

Katie Harder has released a live video for “Beloved” check it out below:

Watch the New Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes video “The Basics of Love” feat. Shanley Del

Melbourne based alt-country favourites Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes have just released their latest single and video “The Basics of Love” featuring vocals from Shanley Del.

“I wrote most of it with Nia Robertson (who had the initial idea for the track) and then finished it off with Damian Cafarella from the band (who also produced it and played drums and some of the guitars),” Lachlan Bryan explained. “It was always going to be a duet and we hope you get all the happy-sad feels we experienced while writing and recording it. You’ll hear longest-serving Wildes member Shaun Ryan on there, as well as friends of the band James Gillard and John Beddgood (The Wilson Pickers). And of course, you’ll hear Shanley Del! She’s not only one of my favourite singers – she’s also just about the coolest person I know. I’m so happy that people are getting to hear her sing again and we’re honoured (flattered even!) that she likes singing with us!”

Check out the video for “The Basics of Love” below:

Listen to the New Single From The Northern Folk, “Get On”

The Northern Folk

Victorian alt-folk collective The Northern Folk have just released their smooth new track “Get On”. The track is the band’s first since their 2016 album Stumble On Home and was written by Paul Dyason on the subject of frustration.

“Frustration with religion, politics and absurdly priced scones,” explains Dyason. “The consequence was less of a sermon, but more an informative manual that outlines fun ways to not be a d**k.”

Take a listen to “Get On” below:

Nahko

American roots singer Nahko (of Nahko and Medicine for the People fame) has just announced plans to release his debut solo album.

Titled My Name Is Bear Nahko’s album is informed by a time his life that he spent searching for his birth mother who had given him up at the age of 15 after being thrust into unthinkable circumstances. At the age of 21 he did find her, and remarkably she lived just 15 minutes from his home.

“I drove to her house and there she was,” said Nahko. “She was crying, I was crying and consequently, as most of these songs were written between the age of 18 and 21, much of the spirit of My Name Is Bear is informed by this time in my life.”

My Name Is Bear is due for release on the 20th October. The full track listing for the album is below:
