Sydney chainsaw-folk favourites The Crooked Fiddle Band have just packed their bags and have headed off to Europe for a tour but they’ve left us with an awesome parting gift – their new single “Kings of the Mud”.

“”Kings of the Mud” is about festivals – the transient, dusty and muddy other worlds we visit regularly – and the way you just give in to the elements and get amongst the puddles,” the band explained. “You’ll also notice that it’s more of a song than is usual for us – lots of vocals going on, as well as some cinematic moments courtesy of Jess’ nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed fiddle), plus we finally got some of the yelling that we do live onto a recording! We recorded this one ourselves, we’ve had it kicking around for a while but hadn’t fit it onto an album. Hope you like it!”

I can’t stop listening to the new Obscura Hail single “Shaky Execution”. It’s just so catchy in that Bright Eyes/jangly sixties folk-pop kind of way.

Obscura Hail is the solo project from Wollongong based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sean Conran. The new track is “a stream of consciousness tractate on the circular nature of friendships, indecision, creativity and their place in the eternal scheme”.

Take a listen to “Shaky Execution” below:

Obscura Hail’s upcoming live dates are here:

Thursday 2nd July – The Yarra Hotel, Melbourne, VIC
Saturday 4th July – Dane Certificate’s, Melbourne, VIC

Celebrated Adelaide based singer-songwriter Tom West will this week release his brand new EP Oncoming Clouds. The EP is the next step in West’s evolution as a songwriter which can definitely be heard in the new single “Big Balloon” which has been getting plenty of attention.

“For me, the rest of the EP kind of focuses into “Big Balloon” musically, and it’s a nice thematic counterweight to the rest of Oncoming Clouds which is fairly mellow,” Tom West explains. “It is my favourite song from the record.”

To celebrate Oncoming Clouds, which is due for release this Thursday 2nd July, Tom West will be touring around the country, starting this week. Check out the full list of dates, plus a preview of the EP below:
