Bluegrass @ Yulli’s Announces Annual Bluegrassified UNHCR Fundraiser

Whoa Mule

Sydney jam night Bluegrass @ Yulli’s is all set to hold its annual UNHCR Fundraiser at Yulli’s in Surry Hills on the 15th November this year.

Following on from last year’s super successful “Bluesgrassified” theme, where a number of Bluegrass @ Yulli’s feature artists covered popular songs in a Bluegrass style, this year we’re going to be getting bluegrass versions of classic country music. Think Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn and beyond.

The Bluegrassified country classics will be presented on the night by the likes of Whoa Mule (above), Shelley’s Murder Boys, Flat Rock Boys, Simone East and more to be announced.

Entry to the night is free and all of the artists are donating their time. Yulli’s will be donating towards the night and the audience will be asked for donations throughout the night to support UNHCR.

As always Bluegrass @ Yulli’s kicks off with an all-in jam at 6pm followed by the performances from 8pm. For more information check out the official Facebook event here.

Alt-country legends Calexico have this week announced plans to release their ninth studio album The Thread That Keeps Us.

“There’s a little more chaos and noise in the mix than what we’ve done in the past,” co-founder Joey Burns explains. “Whenever we’re writing and we come up with something that feels too familiar, someone will end up saying, ‘That feels good, but let’s keep going and see what else we can uncover’. It’s been really important to the arc of this band’s evolution for us to always keep on trying new things.”

Tim Hart Returns With New Album The Narrow Corner

Tim Hart

Singer-songwriter Tim Hart is making a very welcome return to the limelight this summer with the announcement of a new album and an Australian tour.

Hart is well known as the drummer for indie-folk band Boy & Bear so we’re stoked he’s managed to find time to once again focus on his solo project. The new album is titled The Narrow Corner and is due to be released on the 2nd February next year. The album sees Tim Hart reunite with producer Mark Myers who also worked on his last album Milling the Wind as well as Sydney producer Wayne Connolly who worked on Boy & Bear’s album Harlequin Dream.

The first single from The Narrow Corner is “I’d Do Well”, a catchy, Eliot Smith-esque song with an Australian edge.

“I’m really stoked to be releasing my new single “I’d Do Well”,” Tim Hart explained. “For me this song was written in one of my more introspective moments on tour. Missing home and thinking back to living life a bit more simply.”

Take a listen to “I’d Do Well” here:

“The Bonnie Ship, The Diamond” – Beoga

Listen to the New Billy Bragg Single “Saffiyah Smiles”

Billy Bragg

Renowned activist and songwriter Billy Bragg has just released his brand new single “Saffiyah Smiles”.

The track is inspired by the viral photo of Saffiyah Khan who smiled benignly in the face of the incensed leader of the far-right group the English Defence League at an anti-immigrant demonstration in Birmingham (UK) in April ’17.

“Following the shocking scenes of white supremacists marching through the streets of Charlottesville this past summer, my mind went back to an image of a young woman facing down a ranting fascist with nothing but a serene smile,” Bragg explained.

Take a listen to the country shuffle of “Saffiyah Smiles” below:

“Saffiyah Smiles” will be part of Billy Bragg’s newly announced mini album Bridges Not Walls, due for release on the 3rd November. The full track listing is here:

1. The Sleep Of Reason
2. King Tide And The Sunny Day Flood
3. Why We Build The Wall
4. Saffiyah Smiles
5. Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted
6. Full English Brexit
