Did you catch Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats while they were in the country for Bluesfest? By all accounts they were amazing, catching the attention of a lot of the local media.

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats have just released their new video “I Need Never Get Old” which takes the studio based clip to the next level.

“It was a long 15-hour day, the video was fun,” Rateliff explained. “The concept of the video is us struggling over the song for decades, but ironically it took only two hours to record the song in the studio.”

Friday Folk Flashback

“Holding Up The Sky” – Karl Broadie & Caitlin Harnett

I never met Karl Broadie but almost everyone I know in the Sydney music scene knew him well. I’ve been watching all of the loving tributes for Broadie online after he passed away this week and it’s clear how important he was to folk and country music in this country. His legacy will live on in the music.

Andrew Davie and Kev Jones Bear’s Den project is back with the announcement of their second album Red Earth & Pouring Rain.

Recorded over the northern hemisphere winter with producer Ian Grimble, the album is due for release on the 22nd July. The announcement of Red Earth & Pouring Rain follows the announcement that Joey Haynes was leaving Bear’s Den.

Sweet Jean Announce Sophomore Album Monday to Friday

Sweet Jean

When Melbourne indie-folk duo Sweet Jean released their debut album Dear Departure in 2013 the industry stood up and took notice. Individually Sime Nugent and Alice Keath were already well respected on the local scene but their musical coming together and subsequent long player was way more than the sum of its parts.

After being relatively quiet recently (outside of a few gigs) Sweet Jean have announced plans to release their sophomore album Monday to Friday on the 13th May.

The album will feature 10 tracks produced by bandmate John Castle (Vance Joy, Washington, The Bamboos).

“In the past we’ve written about other people in other times and places, and for this album we wanted to stay in the here and now and write about some of the significant and insignificant things that are rolling around us,” Sweet Jean said of writing the album. “For our first album we worked on happy/sad. This time we wanted to bring big/small to the table.”

The first single from Monday to Friday is the 70s throwback “Everything Changes” – take a listen below:

Bluegrass @ Yulli’s for April 2016

The Willing Ponies
Image Courtesy of The Willing Ponies

Sydney if you’ve been hanging out for your monthly does of bluegrass goodness, never fear – Bluegrass @ Yulli’s have announced their April show for next Wednesday the 27th.

As always the night will kick off with an all-in jam from 6pm where anyone can bring down an instrument and pick their way through a bunch of bluegrass and old-time standards. The jam still remains one of my favourite things to do each month – it gives players the opportunity to play with some of Sydney’s best regardless of their skill level.

Then from 8pm we’ll be treated to a performance from local bluegrass, old-time and Americana band The Willing Ponies. Fronted by Ricky Pannowitz and Paul Abrahams, The Willing Ponies are guaranteed to entertain.

Bluegrass @ Yulli’s takes place upstairs at Yulli’s in Surry Hills. For more information check out the official Facebook event here.

Watch the New Dead Maggies Video “Tommy Pieman”

Dead Maggies

What do you do when you have a song called “Tommy Pieman” and you want to make a video? Eat pies!

“Tommy Pieman” is the third single from Tasmanian folk punks The Dead Maggies’ recent album Well Hanged.

“There are so many graphic scenes of band members stuffing their faces with pies that I think I was in a mild state of disbelief whilst shooting,” cinematographer Josh Troy explained. “Only now that I’ve seen it edited can I fully appreciate the flesh in mouth, beard and nose beauty of it.”

Check out the video for “Tommy Pieman” here:

The Dead Maggies are currenlt touring Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania – the remaining dates are below:

Friday 22nd April – Barwon Club, Geelong, VIC
Saturday 23rd April – Westernport Hotel, San Remo, VIC
Sunday 24th April – The Tote, Melbourne, VIC
Sunday 24th April – Whole Lotta Love, Melbourne, VIC

Saturday 30th April – Fresh on Charles, Launceston, TAS
