Friday Folk Flashback

“The False Knight on the Road” – Fleet Foxes

I love it when indie-folk bands show their “folk cred” by releasing versions of traditional songs. Many Fleet Foxes fans don’t even realise that “The False Knight on the Road” is a traditional (from the Child Ballads) as it fits so well with their original material. Such a great version of this song – very reminiscent of the Tim Hart and Maddy Prior version.

The single is taken from Storm’s upcoming debut EP which was produced and mixed by Timber and Steel favourite Hayden Calnin and is due for release in the next couple of months.

We think you’re really going to like “Be Yourself” – take a listen below:

Lucy Wise Trio Announce New Live EP

Lucy Wise

Celebrated Melbourne based folk band the Lucy Wise Trio have announced plans to release a very special live EP. Titled A Painting of the Universe, the EP comprises of five tracks each telling a different story about life in Australia and all inspired by the winning poems of The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards. I’ve seen the Lucy Wise Trio perform a couple of these tracks live and they’re stunning.

The story behind the EP is really interesting. According to the press release “The songs on the EP were commissioned by the Gunnedah Conservatorium to celebrate thirty years of the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards. In August 2014, the trio read through winning poems of the competition and were exposed to the different voices, perspectives and creative minds of hundreds of young Australians, eventually choosing five poems as prompts for songs.”

A Painting of the Universe is due for release on 4th March. The Lucy Wise Trio will be launching the EP at a bunch of headline and festival gigs in March – check out the full list of dates below:

Friday 6th to Monday 9th March – Port Fairy Folk Festival, Port Fairy, VIC
Thursday 19th March – Northcote Uniting Church, Melbourne, VIC
Thursday 2nd to Monday 6th April – The National Folk Festival, Canberra, ACT

Humour has always been a big part of Old Crow Medicine Show’s music and the perfect example of this from their last album is “Brushy Mountain Conjugal Trailer”. The track has just been released as a single (which also features unreleased B-sides “Mother Church” and “The Warden”) and has a brand new video which we think captures the spirit of the track perfectly.

Check out the video for “Brushy Mountain Conjugal Trailer” and see if you can spot the cameo from Timber and Steel favourite Dom Flemons:

Watch the New Aleyce Simmonds Video “Joshua”

Australian country music singer-songwriter Aleyce Simmonds has just released “Joshua”, the latest single from her award winning album Believe. The song is one of Simmonds’ most personal, written for her brother who passed away 21 years ago as a infant. And we love it – especially the wonderful mandolin accompaniment.
