Friday Folk Flashback

“The Massacre of Glencoe” – Don Bruce

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing South Australian based Scottish-Australian singer Don Bruce perform a number of times at folk festivals and I love the way he interprets songs. With St Andrew’s Day being this Sunday this I’ve chosen Bruce’s version of Jim McLean’s tragic tale of the 1692 massacre of the clan MacDonald as today’s FFF – not the happiest of songs but an important part of Scottish history.

Strap on the tinsel and jingle the bells, Christmas and Inner Western is coming to town. Sydney’s regular alt-country and Americana night Country and Inner Western have announced their final show of the year at GoodGod Small Club on Wednesday the 10th December and it’s going to be Christmas themed

Joining Country and Inner Western’s “house band” The Morrisons this time around will be local alt-country legends Tim Chaisson, Catherine Britt, A Man Called Stu, Jenny Queen and Fanny Lumsden and The Thrillseekers. The music kicks off at 8pm with tickets just $10 on the door.

For more information on the night check out the official Facebook invite here.

Listen to The Lumineer’s Penned “The Hanging Tree” from The Hunger Games

The Lumineers

If you’ve seen the latest Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 you’ll have noticed two things about the music:

  1. There’s almost no music from the Lorde curated “soundtrack” other than the track “Yellow Flicker Beat” over the closing credits
  2. The one song that does feature heavily in the film, “The Hanging Tree”, has a distinctly folky flavour reminiscent of the T Bone Burnett produced soundtrack to the first film

The fact that “The Hanging Tree” sounds folky is no accident. The lyrics for the song were written by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins as a “traditional” and have been put to music by Timber and Steel folk favourites The Lumineers. The song itself is used as a rabble-rousing chorus in the movie, not unlike many traditional folk songs before it.

If you haven’t heard it yet check out “The Hanging Tree” from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, performed by Jennifer Lawrence, below:
