Claire sings harmonies with the guitar-playing band leader Marcus de Rijk (note the strong Scottish influence in that name — mmm, maybe not so much), while Geoff Jones plays pipes, whistles and bodhran. It’s funny what we consider measures of success. I’ve been listening to US live music series Daytrotter for as long as I’ve been writing this blog, so to see Sydney duo Falls turn up there was really exciting. Despite all the success Falls have had since moving to the States, seeing their cartoon Daytrotter faces appear in my email was a “they’ve made it” moment for me.

Falls performed four tracks for their Daytrotter session – “Please”, “Home”, “Hollywood” and “Into The Fire”. To listen (and download if you’re a member) check out the session here.

Ok, so “Into The Fire” from The Falls is hardly a new song. A staple of the duo’s live set for years, “Into The Fire” missed the cut on 2011’s Hollywood EP has become a firm favourite of fans everywhere.

In January this year The Falls relocated to Los Angeles from Sydney after signing huge international management and booking deals in the US last year.

“Into The Fire” debuted today on NYLON magazine as a (limited) free download which is massive for The Falls as they ready themselves for a US tour supporting Delta Rae and an appearance at SXSW. Take a listen to “Into The Fire” below:

Jack Carty Announces Christmas Party

If you happen to find yourself in Sydney a couple of days before Christmas you’d be well placed to head down to 505 in Surry Hills where some of our favourite musos will be getting together for a party.

On Monday 23rd Jack Carty is bringing together The Falls, Maples, Iluka, Rosie Catalano, Achoo! Bless You, Luke Wellington, Andrew Brown and James Blow for his Christmas Party. The music kicks off at 7pm and entry is via donation. For more information you can check out the 505 website here.

Stream Folk Day From Music Feeds

Last Friday Aussie music site Music Feeds invited five of Sydney’s best and brightest indie-folk artists into their studio to stream a day of music over the internet. Those artists included a who’s who of Timber and Steel favourites – Achoo! Bless You, Isaac Graham, Leroy Lee, Billygoat Tucker (Billygoat and the Mongrels) and The Falls – who all came together for what was dubbed Music Feeds Folk Day.

And we missed it. The whole thing. Because we were busy. But luckily the industrious folks at Music Feeds have posted the performances on their Youtube channel which we’ve pilfered to embed below – enjoy!

This Wednesday starts a brand new era for Sydney’s weekly Folk Club night at The Soda Factory with founders The Falls stepping aside and a new artist stepping up each month for a residency. The June residency will see popular Sydney folk-pop six-piece Lily So & The Bellows take the stage with a who’s who of local folk acts joining them each week.

Headlining this Wednesday is Timber and Steel favourites Arbori and opening the night will be electro-folk producer Lanterns. As always Folk Club is free with the music kicking off at 8:30pm. For more information check out the official Facebook invite here.

Reasons you have to come down to Folk Club in Sydney this Wednesday 29th May:

It’s the last time for a while that Folk Club stalwarts The Falls will be playing the gig. The duo have decided to relinquish their coveted Folk Club residency over the coming months to allow some of Sydney’s other emerging folk and acoustic talents to take the reins for a while. The Falls at Folk Club is somewhat of a Sydney institution so their final night is bound to be a big one.
Upcoming folk singers Little Bighorn will be opening the night. These guys make such beautiful music and already have a decent following in the local scene. I have a feeling they’re going on to big things – you need to catch them live to see why.
Boy Outside is headlining the night – if you’ve seen his new single “River Runs to the Sea” (below) you’ll realise just how exciting this is

So there you have it – what more could you want? Folk Club kicks off at The Soda Factory in Sydney around 8:30pm on Wednesday (but get there before that as seats are limited) and is free entry. For more information check out the Facebook invite here.
