We sadly lost the great Hugh McDonald this week. Hugh very kindly let us publish his review of the Top Half Folk Festival in 2013. Here’s probably his most well known track from the 2010 Woodford Folk Festival. RIP Hugh McDonald.

Friday Folk Flashback

“Barrett’s Privateers” – Stan Rogers

You know when you come back from a festival with a song stuck in your head? This song has been on a constant loop since Top Half Folk Festival – with thanks to Dave Oakes for continually requesting it at sessions and for Phil Beck for acquiescing and singing it even while losing his voice.

Watch the New Bear’s Den Video “Auld Wives”

Bear's Den

UK nu-folk duo Bear’s Den have just released their new video “Auld Wives” from their upcoming album Red Earth & Pouring Rain (due 22nd July).

“Where my grandparents live in Scotland, and where my mum grew up, there’s this cottage I used to go to to write,” Andrew Davie from the band explained. “It’s always been a bit of an escape for me but also reminds me a lot of growing up, which has always been a trigger for me with songwriting. Nearby there’s three rocks called the Auld Wives Lifts. No one knows how they got there, and there are faces carved into the rocks. There’s all sorts of folk tales around them, that have stayed with me growing up. The song is about my grandad who lived near there. He developed Alzheimer’s in his old age. Knowing someone, and them not knowing you any more, is a difficult thing to go through. Auld Wives became this way of talking about it, of venting about that feeling, and make more sense to me.”

“Holding Up The Sky” – Karl Broadie & Caitlin Harnett

I never met Karl Broadie but almost everyone I know in the Sydney music scene knew him well. I’ve been watching all of the loving tributes for Broadie online after he passed away this week and it’s clear how important he was to folk and country music in this country. His legacy will live on in the music.

Sideshow Alley and Communion Announce Premiere of Music Documentary Austin to Boston

Austin to Boston

In 2012 four of Timber and Steel’s favourite artists – Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff and Bear’s Den – jumped into five old VW camper vans and travelled over three thousand miles across the USA from Austin’s SXSW to a final stop in Boston, and the whole thing was captured on film.

The result is the Sideshow Alley and Communion produced documentary Austin to Boston which spent most of 2014 touring the film festival circuit. As well as the four bands the documentary also features Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett and is narrated by Gill Landry.

The Australian premiere of Austin to Boston has been announced on Friday 8th May at the Australian Centre for The Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne. The premiere will also feature a Q&A with producer Ty Johnson (Sideshow Alley) and a special performance from some of Melbourne’s finest musicians. To get your hands on tickets jump over to the ACMI site here.

And while you’re deliberating on whether to go or not check out the trailer for Austin to Boston below:
