Interviews

“We’ve just recorded our third album of thirteen original tracks, some of which you’d call bluegrass and some of which I don’t know what you’d call it. But it’s all great music and we’ve pulled it off – it’s a really fun band in that respect” – George Jackson from The Company chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“We started playing music together as friends and then came across the Bluegrass and Old Time Society and started going there a lot. We’d learn three songs to play at that gig – every month we’d learn three more songs. And we slowly built up a set and we ended up having enough to do a gig on our own. It was pretty slow but also really nice” – John Healy and Francis Duffy from The Plough chat to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“For the 1979 National Festival, which was in Melbourne, one of the reasons Bloodwood got together in the first place was to promote the 1980 festival which was to be held in Alice Springs. We went down there and had a fabulous reception. We had terrific posters and terrific t-shirts and all that stuff designed by a lady in Alice Springs. It was a knock out design and the strange thing is we were actually asked to stop promoting the 1980 festival by the Melbourne organisers because no one was buying their t-shirts. That is deadset true!” – Bob Barford from Bloodwood chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“I have a deep relationship with Scottish music, as I spent one year of my life in Glasgow, to absorb the music from its source. The music can be really gentle and smooth, when it comes to ballads but also really ferocious and rythmically driving in strathspeys or reels – I really like the broad spectrum of expression and energy when it comes to Scottish Music” – Paul Dangl from Black Market Tune chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“We’ve seen him in a number of settings, from large festival stages, to solo shows, from super groups, to full band concerts and even a magical collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. But it’s the witty repartee that fills the gaps between songs and reveals his inner dork that is exactly the thing that fans love about him”KT Bell Reviews Josh Pyke at Twilight at Taronga. “Wake Up” – Arcade Fire and David Bowie

I’ve been meaning to post this for weeks. It’s like the song was written for Bowie.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Announce New Album PersonA

Edward Sharpe
Image Courtesy of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Last November Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros gave us the first taste of their forth album with the release of sprawling track “Hot Coals”.

Two months later we’re finally getting more details on that album. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (yes, they’re now crediting themselves with a strikethrough now) will release PersonA on the 15th April this year. The album is the first since core member and co-vocalist Jade Castrinos left the band in 2014 and marks a phase in the band’s evolution.

“We had long been a social experiment first, musicians second,” frontman Alex Ebert explained. “Over time, though, we were emerging, by virtue of hours spent, into a group of musicians who could really play together. When Jade left, that confirmed our new fate – music first.”

The latest taster from PersonA is the brand new single “No Love Like Yours” – check it out below:

Listen to the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Track “Hot Coals”

Last week a brand new Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros track hit my inbox with little to no explanation. Apparently it is the first taste of the band’s 4th album which will be released at some point next year.

We really like this track – it has the classic Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros slow build and Alex Ebert’s voice is in fine form. Check out “Hot Coals” below:

Alex Ebert (Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros) Announces A Most Violent Year Soundtrack

Alex Ebert

For the J.C. Chandor film A Most Violent Year Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros frontman Alex Ebert has been tapped on the shoulder to provide the score.

The score earned Alex Ebert a Golden Globe for “Best Original Score” and has been described as haunting and ethereal.

“It is an honor and a privilege to compose for JC, his team, and these actors,” Ebert explained.
“To me this is a character study – a complex combination of hyperbolic capitalist concentration and selfishness mixed with a profound sense of self-imposed ethical virtue. Abel Morales is deep within the American trance – and I sought to bring us all into that trance with him for a time. In the end, though, the story wants a dose of reaction and reality, a bursting of the bubble. I wrote “America For Me” for that purpose.”

The soundtrack of the score is due for release on the 12th December. Take a listen to one of the tracks, “I Am And We Are”, below:

Interviews

“We definitely have fans here but Australia’s so big. Wallander was broadcast here and that definitely helped. And I think with the latest record Dear River having a lot more exposure than previous records has definitely helped build a fan base. I’m constantly getting messages saying “you’ve got to come home!” and I’d love to particularly with this new record Dear River because so much of it is about the subject of home. It is an album that I would like a lot of Australians to hear”Emily Barker chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“That’s what folk music is. It’s very broad. It’s something that you can never quite explain and it’s something that you can never sum up. I’m glad you guys are continuing to follow modern folk music as well – some traditionalists get really boggled done and are closed minded, think that music hasn’t gotten any better since the 20s and 30s and 40s and 50s. To a certain extent I’d agree with them but there’s a lot of new music out there to listen to and appreciate”Pokey LaFarge chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“The Auld Triangle” – The Dubliners

Have you heard the version of “The Auld Triangle” on the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack? It’s pretty special. But it really pales in comparison to The Dubliners’ version because, well, they’re The Dubliners.

Following the high emotion of their last clip, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have released their new video “Let’s Get High (On Love)” and it’s definitely a lot of fun.

The video was shot while the band were on tour last year which means you’ll probably see more than one familiar face popping up in some folky cameos. Check out “Let’s Get High (On Love)” below:
