“I am definitely writing more about my experiences in America. There is a few place name drops in there. And that’s kind of a weird thing at first – it feels like a betrayal or something – and I’m just trying to work out what to do with that. These are songs that are in the very early stages. But coming back here right now there’s still a whole lot of stories that I’ve only half told in my head about Australia and that’s what I love doing when I’m in America with American audiences” – Jordie Lane chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Details here
“For me as a young person writing music in this genre in Australia [Paul Kelly’s] the best at it. Writing songs that evoke some kind of feeling about being Australian and it’s very genuine and sincere so it resonates with me just as a person in Australia. And as a musician I admire him for doing something that I’m trying to do as well. And why these two albums? Because I like bluegrass better than I like pop music” – The Morrisons chat to Gareth Hugh Evans ahead of their Paul Kelly tribute show tonight. Interview here
“All the playing that we’ve done together over the past year and a half as a trio has led us to approach this new project with a whole lot more experience of arranging together and of telling stories together” – Lucy Wise chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here
“After recording the three albums just with us three – Graham [McLeod], Holly [Downes] and I – we really felt like we spent a lot of years and time and effort growing together musically. Learning a lot from each other. Coming from different backgrounds – Holly classical, me folk and Graham rock and pop – we had a huge amount of ground to cover to be as good as each other at various elements of music making. We had a lot of material to work with and a lot of growth and over those three albums we really felt like we did that. We sort of got to a point where we felt like significantly we could move into each other’s territory, hold our own and make that work. We had so much fun really developing and growing and struggling – actually being really inspired and forced to learn and grow – that we kind of looked around for something for our next project that would continue that direction for all of us, so that we wouldn’t stagnate and make the same album again” – Chris Stone from The String Contingent chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here
“The [Alice Springs] folk club, there’s nothing like it. There’s nothing to compare with it now in any way whatsoever. You could write a song in a week and go and perform it in front of people and get feedback as to what they thought it was like. You can’t do that anymore hence the reason it takes me a long time to write songs” – Dave Oakes chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

“The Blue Mountains Music Festival seems to have found the perfect balance. Wedging itself between the Port Fairy and National Folk Festival/Bluesfest guarantees a high calibre of artists not normally seen at a small town event. And its proximity to Sydney makes it easy for day trippers or weekend getaways from the big city. But it still feels like an intimate, community focused event, probably because it’s mostly set on the grounds of a school and the local volunteers are front and centre” – Gareth Hugh Evans reviews the Blue Mountains Music Festival. Interviews
“And this led to a meeting with the just as lovely Deborah Suckling, the brains and organisational braun behind The Soldier’s Wife. Currently an irregularly performed concert, matching female singer-songwriters with ‘..the partners of Australian servicemen – both past and present – and putting the experience, emotions and lives of those women into song'” – Deborah Suckling chats to Bill Quinn. Interview here
“Mixing music, theatre, improv and audience participation, The Travelling Sisters fill that little caravan-y void where some punters might remember a couple of late night clowns used to perform out back of The Duck (the venue formerly known as The Duck and Shovel)” – The Travelling Sisters chat to Bill Quinn. Interview here
“Andrew, like many folkies, wears many hats (some of them at the same time) and at Woodford he’s virtually juggling them. His supper club has two showings at Bill’s Bar every day, and Totally Gourdgeous are launching their new live DVD” – Andrew Clermont chats to Bill Quinn. Interview here
“Bill and Joey were seated in the most salubrious of surrounds (on the slippery slope at the back of the gent’s toilets next to The Duck and The Travelling Sisters‘ caravan), chatting about performance spaces, and radio, and grass roots music development” – Joey Channon from Rabbit Radio chats to Bill Quinn. Interview here
“About 3.6 minutes later, David and Bill were outside the donga by the Spirit of Woodford office, standing variously on the wooden palets or in the mud, dodging dangerous ants the size of small cats, and speaking over the sound spill creeping up the hill from Bluestown, chatting about Paper Lions, music advocacy and the wondrous, wonderful Woodford” – David Cyrus MacDonald from Paper Lions chats to Bill Quinn. Interview here
“Bill Quinn stopped on his amble along the individually decorated paving bricks to chat with Aly de Groot about her workshops” – Aly de Groot chats to Bill Quinn. Interview here
“John Smith is performing at Woodford Folk Festival, and at the time of writing has just finished his last show at The Duck. While that’s bad news for anyone on site who missed his gigs, or for anyone who got along and just wants to see more, the good news for John is that he can now find a shady tree and try to keep cool for the rest of the festival. “This weather is too hot for my blood!” he observed to the lunchtime crowd of Duck Eggs, as he referred to them, in a friendly way” – John Smith chats to Bill Quinn. “Bill Quinn was sitting having his ritual cup of peppermint tea in Fine Earth Foods at Woodford Folk Festival when a postie came into the venue and started attempting to deliver letters. To people” – Bill Quinn discovers The Lettering House at the Woodford Folk Festival. Read his piece here
“At probably my first Woodford Folk Festival, I got a treasured copy of the then very new The Next Turn album by Trouble in the Kitchen. As I set off down the D’Aguilar Highway on 3 January, processing eight days’ worth of festy wonderfullness, I was in an emotional, impressionable state, making listening to the 14 tracks all the more powerful” – Bill Quinn details his love for Trouble in the Kitchen. “I’m a man from the 90s, so i grew up listening to all that “grunge” stuff. Eventually I started to break away from that and found great music in the roots of rock and blues, 70s rock, great songwriters that thrill me like Nick Drake, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Johnny Mitchell, Silvio Rodriguez, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen. Today I listen to all the new folk like Bon Iver, Iron and wine, Jose Gonzalez, Elliot Smith, Bonnie Prince Billie. Saying that, I listen to a great variety of music really different to what I am doing” – Pierrot chats to Aiden Quinn

Friday Folk Flashback
“Trellick Tower” – Emmy The Great
The thing I love most about Emmy The Great’s songwriting is her ability to be both metaphorical and autobiographical at the same time. “Trellick Tower” is the final track from her 2011 album Virtue and documents the breakdown of her relationship after her finance became a born-again Christian. Beautiful stuff.
Sydney folk, jazz and acoustic duo Betty & Oswald this week debuted their brand new single “Fragile Little Lover”. For the last few months it feels like Betty & Oswald have been absolutely everywhere around the Sydney scene and the jazz-blues goodness of the new single is only going to turn a few more heads.
Take a listen to “Fragile Little Lover” below:

There were a ton of folk festival announcements all over the weekend but the one that everyone is talking about is the 2014 Woodford Folk Festival lineup. The full musical program dropped yesterday with the usual mix of folk, roots, trad, singer-songwriter and I-don’t-know-why-they’re-at-a-folk-festival artists.
The Woodford Folk Festival takes place from the 27th December to the 1st January. For more information including how to get your hands on tickets check out the official site here.
Regular Sydney folk and alt-country night the Porch Light Sessions just keeps on trucking withe the announcement of their August lineup. Curated by the incomparable Leroy Lee, these nights are very quickly becoming an institution on the Sydney folk scene.
The August edition will take place on Thursday 14th August at the Petersham Bowling Club and will feature sets from local folksters Betty & Oswald and Andy Golledge.
Don’t think for a moment that just because Easter has come and gone that the folk festival season is over – we’re still smack bang in the middle of some fantastic events right around the country.
If you’re in Sydney this weekend you’d do well to get yourself north of the bridge to the Berry Reserve in Narrabeen for the 2014 Northern Beaches Music Festival. Sydney itself doesn’t have a defining folk festival but it does have a bunch of smaller festivals that are within easy access scattered around its outskirts and the Northern Beaches Music Festival is definitely worth a day (or even weekend) trip.
