Friday Folk Flashback

“Black Jack Davey” – The White Stripes

Over the last few weeks we’ve featured various songs in the “Gypsy Davey” tradition. Here’s a relatively modern take featuring The White Stripes covering Bob Dylan’s version of “Black Jack Davey”. This is an acoustic version but there’s an electric version out there in the universe as well.

Listen to the New Andrew Bird Single “Left Handed Kisses” feat. Fiona Apple

I love it when two artists you wouldn’t normally associate with each other come together. Case in point – the new Andrew Bird single “Left Handed Kisses” which features guest vocals from the indomitable Fiona Apple.

“Left Handed Kisses” is taken from Bird’s upcoming album Are You Serious, due on the 1st April, and is a rare love song from the singer-songwriter-violinist.

“My inclination was to write a song about why I can’t write a simple love song,” Andrew Bird explained. “The song began as an internal dialogue. At first it was just my voice. Then another voice came creeping in and I thought “this should be a duet if I can find the right person.” I needed to find someone really indicting. She was totally committed. The session was a long whiskey-fueled night – unhinged, for sure. All worth it, of course. I can’t write simple love songs. People are complex.”

Take a listen to “Left Handed Kisses” below:

Friday Folk Flashback

“The False Knight on the Road” – Fleet Foxes

I love it when indie-folk bands show their “folk cred” by releasing versions of traditional songs. Many Fleet Foxes fans don’t even realise that “The False Knight on the Road” is a traditional (from the Child Ballads) as it fits so well with their original material. Such a great version of this song – very reminiscent of the Tim Hart and Maddy Prior version.
