“Man I can tell you that’s definitely been a mix dose of unrelenting stress, but I’ve been lucky to have worked with such incredible people that the end result is something I’m 94% happy with, which is quite a lot. I’m sure I’m not the only songwriter to have written a whole EP and then rolled over one day saying “I can’t believe I almost released this. No thanks, bin them all”. That happened twice unfortunately, but after getting out of my head for awhile and taking some time to be inspired the tracks kind of chose themselves. Friday Folk Flashback

“Geordie” – Joan Baez

I’ve spent a lot of this week listening to NPR Music’s coverage of last weekend’s Newport Folk Festival. During the Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer set Mitchell introduced her version of “Geordie” by saying “we’re going to give you a ballad that it’s possible barefoot Joan Baez could have done on this stage fifty years ago”. So I hunted out Baez’s version of the Child Ballad and thought I’d share.

If you’re familiar with the Sydney folk scene over the last five years or so you’ve probably come across singer-songwriter, poet and all round folk legend Cj Shaw. Shaw, who used to run the monthly folk night Shut The Folk Up, was also known for his work as a solo artist and with his band The Blow Ins.

In 2009 Cj Shaw and The Blow Ins spent a winter in Melbourne recording the album album that would eventually become Milk Crate Throne. Shaw and co tinkered with the recording over the years and eventually decided to strip it back to its lo fi roots for a release earlier this month.

The album features Cj Shaw (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Kyla Davies (vocals), Jade Abbott (vocals), Cam Slice (bass), Jonny Zoum (stomping and drums) and David Perram (guitar and vocals) and was poduced by Johnny Zoum and Peter Woodland. Take a listen to it below and pick it up on Bandcamp here:

The Snowy Mountains of Music Festival Announces First Lineup

Summer may be officially over but that doesn’t mean the end to music festival announcements. No siree. We have a whole winter of festivals to look forward to and the wintery-est of all is the Snowy Mountains of Music who have just this morning announced their first round of artists. And what a lineup – as always it’s leaning heavily to the folky end of the spectrum and we couldn’t be happier.

Announced this morning were Karma County’s front man Brendan Gallagher, Nicky Bomba with Bustamento, The Quarry Mountain Dead Rats (above), The Mouldy Lovers, Frencham Smith, Cj Shaw and the Blow Ins, AJ Leonard’s Tropical Lounge, Mal Webb, A French Butler Called Smith, Wongawilli, Riogh and The Hussy Hicks.

The Snowy Mountains of Music takes place over the June long weekend (8th to the 11th June) in Perisher, NSW. Super early bird tickets are available until the 29th March. Check out the official web site for more details.
