Listen to The Lumineer’s Penned “The Hanging Tree” from The Hunger Games

If you’ve seen the latest Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 you’ll have noticed two things about the music:

  1. There’s almost no music from the Lorde curated “soundtrack” other than the track “Yellow Flicker Beat” over the closing credits
  2. The one song that does feature heavily in the film, “The Hanging Tree”, has a distinctly folky flavour reminiscent of the T Bone Burnett produced soundtrack to the first film

The fact that “The Hanging Tree” sounds folky is no accident. The lyrics for the song were written by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins as a “traditional” and have been put to music by Timber and Steel folk favourites The Lumineers. The song itself is used as a rabble-rousing chorus in the movie, not unlike many traditional folk songs before it.
