Friday Folk Flashback

“Annabelle Lee” – Sarah Jarosz

Listen to the New Single from The Bushwackers “Dirt Under My Nails”

Bushwackers

The latest single from Australian bush music legends The Bushwackers’ latest album The Hungry Mile is “Dirt Under My Nails”. The track was written by Melbourne based songwriter Rich Davies about the migrant experience in Australia.

“This is a great song from Rich Davies in Melbourne,” guitarist, Roger Corbett said. “It came out of a songwriting project involving the use of historical photos and professional songwriters who crafted songs from the images in those photos. It tells the familiar story of an Italian migrant building his life in Australia.”

“We want listeners of The Hungry Mile to take away a sense of pride in our history,” singer Dobe Newton added. “We would like them to take away the humour, the strength and the pride that is embodied in Australian culture of today and from our past.”

Take a listen to “Dirt Under My Nails” below:

Legendary bush band The Bushwackers have just released their brand new single and video “Leave It In The Ground”. Folk music and the protest movement have long been interlinked and The Bushwackers are adding to that tradition with this track, protesting the take over of farming and rural landscapes for the profit of mining and energy companies.

It looks like we’re well and truly into that time of year when the major folk festivals start announcing their lineups. The next cab off the rank is the Port Fairy Folk Festival, arguably one of Australia’s top folk events, which next year will be held from the 11th to the 14th March.

The Port Fairy Folk Festival enters its 40th year in 2016 so as you’d expect the lineup is going to be huge. The first round of artists did not disappoint either – announced this time around were Ayleen O’Hanlon, Claymore, DakhaBrakha (Ukraine), Dave Arden, Eric Bogle, Fourplay, Grigoryan Brothers, John McCutcheon (USA), Katie Noonan’s Vanguard, Lloyd Spiegel, Manran (Scotland), Mary Black (Ireland, above), Moxie (Ireland), Nicky Bomba’s Bustamento, Pierce Brothers, Ruby Boots, Steve Poltz (USA), Sara Storer, Shellie Morris, Suzannah Espie, The Bushwackers, The East Pointers (Canada), The Ugly Uncles, Truckstop Honeymoon (USA), Three Kings, The Woohoo Revue and The Young’uns (UK) with plenty more to come.

A couple of years ago the National Museum of Australia put together a series of videos on Youtube, hosted by Jimeoin, on Irish Music in Australia. Titled “The Craic live at The Quiet Man” the series covers tunes, songs and dance and really celebrates the Irish tradition in this country.

As it’s St Patrick’s Day we thought we’d bring you the entire series to provide you with a soundtrack for the day.

Blog

“Christmas music is folk music. You can’t deny it. So as a result we love Christmas music here at Timber and Steel – both the traditional carols and songs and the wealth of brand new material that is released by our favourite artists every year” – we list our favourite folky Christmas songs of 2012 here

“It was originally going to be a list of 10 songs. But I couldn’t settle on just 10. So the list grew. And grew and grew. But after my hacking and slashing (and limiting myself to one song per artist) I managed to settle on a top 25 and I think I’ve got a pretty nice mix here – lots of local music, some notable international artists, a few surprises and a number one song that may not have been mentioned on Timber and Steel at all” – check out Gareth Hugh Evans’ top 25 tracks of 2012 here
