Andrew Swift – “Ball & Chain”

“Ball & Chain” is pure country. Golden Guitar winner Andrew Swift has unleashed this latest track ahead of a massive Australian kicking off this July.

I’m loving the instrumentation on this one, with fiddle and lap steel soloing over the top of Swift who is in-turn accompanied by a choir. Check out his upcoming tour dates and the video for “Ball & Chain” below:

Saturday 6th July – The Royal Oak Hotel, Launceston, TAS
Sunday 7th July – Longley International, Longley, TAS

Bon Iver – “Hey, Ma” and “U (Man Like)”

Out of nowhere beloved indie-folk legend Bon Iver has dropped two brand new tracks, “Hey, Ma” and “U (Man Like)”. The tracks see Justin Veron and co continue their musical evolution, layering electronic music, samples, loops and more with folk sensibilities. “Hey, Ma” is the most similar to previous Bon Iver work, while “U (Man Like)” takes us down a neo-soul route that feels ripe to be sampled by Kanye.

Gareth Leach – “Better or Worse?”

Victorian alt-country singer Gareth Leach tackles anxiety and depression with the release of this new single “Better or Worse?”.

“Without tiptoeing around the subject, “Better or Worse?” is about personal anxiety and depression, something that I have personally been struggling with for as long as I can remember,” Leach explained. “It’s about dealing with living with your own high expectations of what life is supposed to be.”

The heavy subject matter on the track works really well with the shimmering guitars and Gareth Leach’s emotional vocal delivery. This is country music at its deeply personal best.

Harrison Storm – “Falling Down”

I’m always excited for new music from singer-songwriter Harrison Storm and with his latest release I’ve not been disappointed.

“Falling Down”, taken from the upcoming EP of the same name due on the 26th July, is the type of epic indie-folk that Australian artists do so well (and which always proves to be very radio friendly). I love his finger picked guitar throughout and the soulful resonance of his voice.

“Falling Down is a song about those times in a relationship where there seems to be a shadow looming overhead and you’re desperately trying to see through it and hang on,” Harrison Storm explained. Full dates for his upcoming Australian tour are below:

Thursday 8th August – Grace Emily, Adelaide, NSW
Friday 9th August – Four5Nine, Perth, WA
Saturday 10th August – Grace Darling, Melbourne, VIC
Friday 16th August – Heya Bar, Brisbane, QLD
Saturday 17th August – The Vanguard, Sydney, NSW

Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes – “The Road”

My deep affection for the songwriting of Lachlan Bryan continues with the release of “The Road”, the latest single with his band The Wildes. Tackling a tried and true subject, “The Road” is beautifully put together with Bryan’s finger-picked guitar and vocals front and centre, adeptly accompanied by subtle base and lap steel.

“I’m a kind of restless person,” Lachlan Bryan explains. “and in my adult life I’ve chosen the road – both literally and figuratively, over just about everything else. Of course I’ve always felt that this probably isn’t a healthy thing, but I’ve come to accept that it is who I am. That’s really what this song is about – it’s kind of a meditation for all of us restless spirits out there.”

This Way North – “Night Terrors”

Indie duo This Way North explore sleeping disorders and the “intersection between dreams and reality” with their rocking new single and video “Night Terrors”. The pounding track is relentless in its driving rhythms and the vocals are next level.

This Way North are launching “Night Terrors” on Friday 14th June at Stay Gold in Melbourne.

Melbourne based alt-country favourites Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes have just released their latest single and video “The Basics of Love” featuring vocals from Shanley Del.

“I wrote most of it with Nia Robertson (who had the initial idea for the track) and then finished it off with Damian Cafarella from the band (who also produced it and played drums and some of the guitars),” Lachlan Bryan explained. “It was always going to be a duet and we hope you get all the happy-sad feels we experienced while writing and recording it. You’ll hear longest-serving Wildes member Shaun Ryan on there, as well as friends of the band James Gillard and John Beddgood (The Wilson Pickers). And of course, you’ll hear Shanley Del! She’s not only one of my favourite singers – she’s also just about the coolest person I know. I’m so happy that people are getting to hear her sing again and we’re honoured (flattered even!) that she likes singing with us!”

“Golden Glove” – Matt & Shannon Heaton

Listen to a Sample of the Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes Single “Long Way To Fall”

Lachlan Bryan

The new single from Melbourne based alt-country stalwarts Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, “Long Way To Fall” has been a long time coming. Nearly 10 years in fact.

“I actually wrote this song before we even made our first album”, explains Lachlan Bryan. “When I would play it live it would always go down well. But we never quite had the right arrangement with the band for it, and it never really fit on an album until the other songs on [2016 album] The Mountain came along. I’m glad it finally made it.”

“Long Way To Fall” features guest vocals from Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes’ sometimes touring partner Aleyce Simmonds – take a listen to a sample of the track below:

Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes will be appearing at the Broadbeach Country Music Festival from the 28th to 30th July.

Dashville

Now in its third year Americana festival Dashville Skyline has already cemented itself as a must attend event on the music calendar.

Held in the bushland of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Dashville Skyline is the sister festival of the hugely popular Gum Ball and features over 30 live performances over 3 days from the 29th September to the 1st October.

Dashville Skyline has just announced its first round of artists for this year and it’s looking like it’s going to be a pretty special event.

The international lineup includes Mark Olson & Ingunn Ringvold from US and Norway, Tim Easton from Nashville, Dan Tuffy’s new musical project Songs From Dan (an expat based in the Netherlands), Mel Parsons from NZ and The Roamin’ Jasmine from New Orleans.

Closer to home the local contigent includes Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, William Crighton, Immigrant Union, Claire Anne Taylor, Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, Pony Face, Emma Russack and Roadhouses.

Tickets for Dashville Skyline are on sale now – check out the official web site for more details. And stay tuned for more lineup announcements soon!

“When I was starting out I relied more on boundless energy, now days I tend to rely on experience a bit more, which is probably to say I’m not as blindly convinced about every idea I have anymore. In terms of song writing, I used to try and explain things more than I should, and now I think I’m trying to create a genuine echo in things I don’t understand so much”Felix Riebl chats to KT Bell. “The calibre of artists at a festival like Bluesfest speaks for itself so that and Woodford are unlike any other in the world. You just have to go because words don’t do them justice”Irish Mythen chats to KT Bell. Interview here

“We got nominated to be a part of the [Folk Alliance] showcase at the National Folk Festival last year. I’d never been to The National so it was more just going along and being part of it – we didn’t really realise it was a competition as such. So we went up and played a couple of songs and at the end they said “you guys are the winners”. It was kind of weird and we didn’t really know what we got. But it’s been amazing working with them – they’re super helpful”Kaurna Cronin chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

Timber and Steel Recommends – Go To This Gig

St. Patrick’s Day at the Gaelic feat. Fresh off The Boat

St Patrick's Day

This Thursday is St Patrick’s Day and there’s a wealth of Irish and celtic music happening around the country. But if we were to place a bet on where the best St Paddy’s craic will be on the 17th our money is on The Gaelic Club in Sydney – trad music sessions and the best Guinness in town. Along with the sessions there’ll be live music from the incredible Fresh off The Boat. What more do you need?
