Friday Folk Flashback

“Seasons” – Kate Burke and Ruth Hazelton

New Music Monday – 23rd September

Georgia State Line

Devendra Banhart – “Taking a Page”

“Taking a Page” is taken from Devendra Banhart’s brand new album Ma and is once again a piece of quirky pop music from the freak folk singer-songwriter. The song skips and jumps over a funky baseline with stabbing synths and subtle guitar pieces. It’s weird and twisty, with some strange strange lyrics, but I think you’ll really like it.

Freya Josephine Hollick – “Nobody’s No Better Than No One”

Freya Josephine Hollick has just dropped “Nobody’s No Better Than No One”, the first taste from her upcoming 2020 album The Real World. The track features Hollick confidently swaggering her way through a bluesy, country-rock piece of art that feels like it could have been ripped from the 70s or 80s. Freya Josephine Hollick’s is absolutely on point and her ability to leave space for the driving melody is inspired. Great stuff.

Georgia Knight – “Samba Baby”

“Samba Baby” is the new single from Melbourne singer-songwriter Georgia Knight. The languid track feels like a hot summer day, with a soothing melody that slips over a lazy samba beat, punctuated by the occasional fuzzy guitar. Knight vocal style is reminiscent of singers like Roy Orbison or KD Lang, the perfect accompaniment to the sultry tone of the track.

Georgia State Line – “From Down Here”

Melbourne Americana band Georgia State Line released their brand new single “From Down Here” at the end of last week. The single manages to fuse the heartbreak and melancholy of country music with an upbeat, catchy melody. And then there’s Georgia Delves’ amazing voice – what a talent!

“This track is my antidote to life’s more challenging moments,” Delves explained. “We all, at one point or another, find ourselves on paths that we don’t necessarily want to be walking. It takes a lot of strength to accept the process as it is, and trust the greater plan. A lemons-to-lemonade situation, really.”

Hannah Acfield – “Searching (for more)”

Melbourne based singer-songwriter Hannah Acfield released her soulful new single and video “”Searching (for more)”. The single highlights Acfield’s incredible voice which powers through the track and is filled with so much emotion. I love the choppy electric guitar here and the way the song builds with it’s dirty drums, bass and organ.

Hannah Acfield is heading out on tour this October – dates are below:

Saturday 5th October – The Dusty Attic, Lismore, NSW
Sunday 6th October – Junk Bar, Brisbane, QLD
Wednesday 9th October – Folkswagon, Cafe Lounge, Sydney, NSW
Friday 25th October – The Wesley Anne, Melbourne, VIC

Musketeer – “Wolves”

Europe-based Australian troubadour Musketeer sent over his new single “Wolves” which he promises is the folkiest from his upcoming EP The North Sea, due next year. The single is inspired by the idea of wolves repopulating Scandinavia and has a really epic, nordic feel with heavy drums and droning vocals. Musketeer has really leant into the bigger sound of his four piece band for this track and the result is huge.

Pieta Brown – “Bring Me”

Last week Pieta Brown released her S. Carey (Bon Iver) produced new album Freeway. The latest single from the album is the Dylan-esque ballad “Bring Me”. I love the way that Brown bends her vocal style across the simple acoustic strumming of “Bring Me”, adding a depth and resonance to the song. Beautiful stuff.

Wallis Bird – “Life Is Long”

“Life Is Long” is the new single from Irish singer-songwriter Wallis Bird’s new album Woman, due for release this Friday 27th September. The track mixes the quirk of a Bjork song with the pop sensibility of someone like Sia, all the while staying true to the authenticity of Wallis Bird’s unique voice.

Sydney alt-country seven piece Big Sky Mountain released their first single “Homeland”, which is taken from their upcoming debut album All Our Minutes. “Homeland” is a wonderful song – expansive but not overcrowded, modern while still paying tribute to the traditions that have come before. Their harmonies remind me of The Little Stevies in places, while the songwriting is reminiscent of The Waifs.

Big Sky Mountain will be appearing at the Perisher Peak festival this weekend as well as a bunch of other gigs and festivals on the east coast:

Thursday 6th June – Smith’s Alternative, Canberra, ACT
Friday 7th to Monday 10th June – Perisher Peak Festival, Perisher, NSW
Friday 5th July – The Townie, Sydney, NSW
Saturday 6th July – Bundanoon Winterfest, Bundanoon, NSW
Fridat 26th July – Gasoline Pony, Sydney, NSW
Friday 9th August – Club Willoughby, Sydney, NSW
Saturday 14th September – Crack ‘N’ Jack Spring Music Festival, Port Stephens, NSW
Saturday 19th Octover – Fusion Multicultural Street Festival, Wagga Wagga, NSW

Freya Josephine Hollick – “Jesus Hates It When You Smoke”

Alt-country crooner Freya Josephine Hollick is channelling David Lynch with her new video and single “Jesus Hates It When You Smoke”. The slightly twisted aesthetic of the video fits really well with the track, which feels just slightly left of a typical country song – probably mostly down to the shimmering guitars and Hollick’s unique voice.

Freya Josephine Hollick will be playing the Gasometer in Melbourne on Saturday 15th June.

Saint Sister – “Is It Too Early? (Kilmainham)”

Irish duo Saint Sister have just dropped their amazing new single “Is It Too Early? (Kilmainham)”. The beautiful layered vocals are amplified by hip hop beats and subtle synths courtesy of producers Diffusion Lab and the result is something that breaks through any genre constraints.

“We were very open going into Diffusion Lab, we went into the studio willing to go somewhere with the song that we possibly wouldn’t have gone had we worked on it by ourselves,” Gemma Doherty from the band explained. “They suggested sounds outside of our instincts. In the end, I think the song perfectly represents the best of both worlds and our respective musical sensibilities.”

Sufjan Stevens – “Love Yourself”

To celebrate Pride Month Sufjan Stevens has released two new songs on the topic of love – “Love Yourself” and “With My Whole Heart”. The first of those two tracks, “Love Yourself”, is based on a sketch Stevens wrote 20 years ago and definitely has him flexing his electro and synth muscles rather than the softer folk he’s been returning to lately. It’s still a cracking song though and has everything you’ve come to love from new Sufjan Stevens music.

Tunng – “Bank Holiday”

Folktronica pioneers Tunng will be releasing an album of b-sides and obscurities spanning their entire career on the 28th June titled This Is Tunng … Magpie Bites and Other Cuts. The band have revealed a couple of tracks from the album already, one of which is the decidedly chunky “Bank Holiday”.

The track is full of weird samples, big drums and bass and Tunng’s signature melding of folk instrumentation with electronica elements. Strange and lots of fun.

Friday Folk Flashback

“Temperance Reel” – Sierra Hull & Justin Moses

Listen to the New Freya Josephine Hollick Single “The Pearly Gates of the Landfill”

Freya Josephone Hollick

Melbourne alt-country singer-songwriter Freya Josephine Hollick has just launched her brand new single “The Pearly Gates of the Landfill”. The track is the singer’s first since the release of her EP Don’t Mess With The Doyenne earlier this year.

“I wrote it about – like always – my daughter’s dad, and a date that we had where we went to the tip shop” Hollick explained. “And it’s all true, everything that’s in the song – it comes from the hilarious redneck romance that I had with my daughter’s dad.”

The single was recorded while singer-songwriter Robert Ellis, bass player Geoffrey Muller and drummer Michael “Tank” Lisenbe were in town for the Out On The Weekend festival, all three of which Freya Josephine Hollick convinced to join her in the studio for the single.

“I’d been listening a lot to Robert’s records, and also to the Traveller tunes,” she explains, “and then when the opportunity arose that they could come into the studio and record, I thought it was perfect ‘cause I’d sort of written the song with their instrumentation in mind anyway, which was kinda cool.”

Take a listen to “The Pearly Gates of the Landfill” below:

Heading up the lineup is the incomparable Justin Townes Earle who will be taking to the stage with a full band in tow. Joining him from the US will be the legendary Son Volt and Americana super group Traveller featuring Jonny Fritz, Robert Ellis and Cory Chisel.

The rest of the lineup is simply cracking with a who’s who of the local and international scene including All Our Exes Live In Texas, The Deslondes, Robbie Fulks, Fanny Lumsden, The Sadies, Joshua Hedley, Raised by Eagles, Freya Josephine Hollick, Davidson Brothers and The Moonee Valley Drifters.
