Listen to the New Phia Single “Oxide”

Melbourne based singer-songwriter Phia debuted her new sound this month with the release of her new single “Oxide”. Gone are the looped mbira tracks, replaced with distorted drums and intergalactic juno synths.

The track is inspired by an interview Phia read with Björk late last year.

“Late last year Björk released a viral Facebook post about the criticism she and other female artists face when their subject matter departs from boyfriends and love songs, and encompasses atoms, galaxies or activism,” Phia explained. “I was enraged but also inspired, and the songs just started to come.”

Take a listen to “Oxide” below:

“Oxide” is taken from Phia’s upcoming EP The Woman Who Counted The Stars which is due on the 29th September. Phia is also heading out on tour from the end of November – the full list of dates are here:

Listen to the New Hayden Calnin Single “Collision”

The latest single from electro-folk singer-songwriter Hayden Calnin is the wonderfully sparse “Collision”. Featuring swelling production underneath Calnin’s soaring vocals, “Collision” is one of favourite tracks from Melbourne based artist.

“”Collision” is maybe one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write,” Hayden Calnin explained. “I wrote it in secret, not really showing anyone until I was comfortable with how it was sounding. It was never meant to be a song with all the hooks and all the standard rules in song structure that you’re meant to follow. I avoided that and just let it come out naturally.”Collision” is an expression about a really dark time for a friend of mine. And, like my previous single, “Waves”, following that exploration of mental health in young adults.”

“Collision” is the latest taste of Hayden Calnin’s EP Dirt, due this Friday 14th July. Take a listen to the track below:

Listen to Julia Johnson’s Debut Solo Single “Melissa”

Julia Johnson

For a while now I’ve noticed Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens front-woman Julia Johnson popping up on bills around the country under her own name, so always suspected it was only a matter of time before we saw her officially launch a solo career.

It’s super exciting to have these suspicions confirmed with the release of Johnson’s debut solo single “Melissa”. The single sees Julia Johnson step away from the guitar and banjo driven folk of Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens and more towards a synth-folk sound.

“I needed to get out of my comfort zone, and boy did I do a good job of that,” Johnson explained. “After a few months in Berlin, my old songs didn’t fit me anymore. Writing all new material has been liberating and fun, but also uncomfortable. This new territory is not easy to navigate.”

“Working with [producer Sarah Belkner] has had a huge impact on me creatively. Sarah can take the amorphous, blurry sketches of what I imagine and craft tangible, fleshed-out songs. It’s new to me, putting trust in someone else’s vision. Her instincts and incredible knowledge helped me to shape “Melissa”, taking the song into a realm which I couldn’t have taken it to on my own.”

Take a listen “to Melissa” below:

Personally I love the way “Melissa” blends drums and synths with the more organic auto-harp and percussion – beautiful stuff.

Julia Johnson has a handful of tour dates in the coming weeks where you can really get to know her new sound – the full list of shows are here:

Saturday 22nd July – Smith’s Alternative, Canberra, ACT
Wednesday 2nd August – FolkSwagon, Cafe Lounge, Sydney, NSW

The amazing electro-folk singer-songwriter Hayden Calnin has just released his stunning new track “Waves”. The track is taken from an upcoming EP which is due for release later this year.

“”Waves” was written for a good friend and became my interpretation of what was going on in that friend’s head whilst battling severe mental health issues,” Calnin explained. “I wasn’t always able to be there to help them through it and the song evolved into somewhat of an ode to me being a bit of a shit friend when they really needed someone around. I wanted to let that friend know I’m always thinking of them.”

Radical Face Guests on New Miaou Track “Lost Souls”

Miaou Radical Face

Every now and then something we wouldn’t normally publish crosses the Timber and Steel desk that we just have to share. Like this new video from Japanese based synth/pop/experimental trio Miaou. Not a genre that falls anywhere near folk but we felt we had to share because of the beautiful inclusion of Radical Face (who is touring in Japan with Miaou) on the track “Lost Souls”. I guess that kind of sort of makes this electro-folk? Check out the video for yourself below:
