Interviews

“We got nominated to be a part of the [Folk Alliance] showcase at the National Folk Festival last year. I’d never been to The National so it was more just going along and being part of it – we didn’t really realise it was a competition as such. So we went up and played a couple of songs and at the end they said “you guys are the winners”. It was kind of weird and we didn’t really know what we got. But it’s been amazing working with them – they’re super helpful”Kaurna Cronin chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

Friday Folk Flashback

“Wicked Game” – James Vincent McMorrow

If anyone checked out the Game of Thrones trailer this week they may have wondered who was doing the stunning acoustic version of “Wicked Game”. Well wonder no more – it was Timber and Steel favourite James Vincent McMorrow from his 2012 EP We Don’t Eat.

Bluegrass @ Yulli’s for March 2016

Devil on the Rooftop

We’re already a week into March which means it’s not long until the next edition of Bluegrass @ Yulli’s in Sydney.

If you haven’t heard of Bluegrass @ Yulli’s you’re in for a treat. The unique night kicks off at 6pm with an all in jam where anyone with a banjo, guitar, bass, mandolin, fiddle or more can kick back and pick some bluegrass and old time tunes with other like minded musos from all over the city.

Then from 8pm a feature artist takes to the stage to delight the crowd with some sweet tunes. This month will see new trio Devil on the Rooftop featuring Jess Randall (The Crooked Fiddle Band), Morgan Haselden (Mimosa) and Elsen Price. Devil on the Rooftop combine gypsy, folk, celtic, bluegrass and more to create some pretty amazing music.

Bluegrass @ Yulli’s takes place at Yulli’s in Surry Hills on Wednesday 16th March and entry is free. For more information check out the official Facebook event here.

Reviews

Gigs

“This is a band that has reached its stride and now has a career pace that they could maintain for the veritable marathon ahead. While their new stuff is developing a new sound and direction, their old stuff is just as open to new interpretation and appreciation. Their rendition of “Rabbit Song” was beautiful, with a slowed bridge the seems to hang in its own air only to roll and tumble down from the stage, out across the audience. The quality of this performance brought a whole new grace and beauty to a well known favourite”KT Bell reviews Boy & Bear. Details here
