Violinist and looping pedal master Jane Aubourg recently released her brand new single “The Girl with the Ash Brown Hair”. The track is inspired by a photo of performance artist Tamara Elkins and “uses a slowed and reversed performance of Debussy’s The Girl with the Flaxen Hair, layered with 5-string violin”.

We think this is pretty stunning and well worth a share. Listen to “The Girl with the Ash Brown Hair” below:

Don’t be surprised if Yo-Yo Ma’s bluegrass/classical fusion collaboration with Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile, The Goat Rodeo Sessions, is a late contender for the top spot on the various “Album of the Year” polls that are already popping up around the place. The album is simply wonderful and well deserving of an addition to anyone’s collection.

The latest video from the collaboration is for the track “Helping Hand”. While the track definitely sways closer to the contemporary classical end of the spectrum but there’s a strong bluegrass undertone here. Check it out below:

Acclaimed classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma has decided to dip his toe into the folk pond with his latest release The Goat Rodeo Sessions. Described as “genre-defying” The Goat Rodeo Sessions teams Yo-Yo Ma with a pretty impressive group of musicians – classical bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist from the Punch Brothers Chris Thile and Bluegrass fiddle legend Stuart Duncan – and the result is something pretty unique. Check out the track “Attaboy” below:

Not quite bluegrass, not quite celtic, not quite classical, The Goat Rodeo Sessions is all about musicians who love playing music together. A couple of tracks also feature the divine Aoife O’Donovan (Crooked Still) on vocals making this a pretty all-star recording. Yo-Yo Ma and co have already put a bunch of “behind the scenes” videos online (including the one below) and have been all over late night US TV.

The Goat Rodeo Sessions is available now. For more information check out Yo-Yo Ma’s official website.

L’Arpeggiata – 17th Century Folk

Ready to have your folk swag stretched?
Want to check out something a little… fancy, that has nothing to do with a certain fast food chain?

Touring Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne in September… Parissian-based L’Arpeggiata will be teaming up with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra to present Baroque Tarantella.

The Orchestra themselves describe the event as “…an irresistible mix of baroque beats and traditional songs of sixteenth and seventeenth century Italy, performed on period instruments,” and a “…joyous celebration of folk melodies, love stories and infectious dance rhythms.”

An honestly exciting event that will bridge the scary realm of classical and folk, and stretch your musical tastes.
