By now you’ll be all over the announcement of the brand new Mumford and Sons album Babel. And if you read our piece on the announcement you’ll know that Babel is full of material that the band have been writing and performing on the road for the last year or so. In the words of the band themselves:
“We love playing live, obviously, but it had also become an important part of our creative process, we had been writing and rehearsing in soundchecks, and sort of ‘road-testing’ new songs on our very gracious audiences.”
And where there’s live music these days there’s camera phones. When a band like Mumford and Sons road tests a new song you can be sure it won’t be long before it makes its way onto YouTube. So we thought we’d scour the net and see if we could put together Babel in live videos (and radio performance recordings) two months out from the album’s release.
Keep in mind that these songs have probably evolved a lot since their initial performances. But we think this is a pretty good example of what we can expect from Babel
We tried and we tried but this song hasn’t surfaced online. Maybe this isn’t a full song? Maybe it’s just one of those semi-songs that bands use to open albums (like a modern “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”). Or maybe it’s the track featured in the background of their Babel teaser video…
2. Whispers In The Dark
3. I Will Wait
Just excuse the people talking over the top of the introduction.
4. Holland Road
This video (and a few like it on YouTube) call this song “Home”. But we think this is actually the same song as “Holland Road” mainly from the opening lines – “I ran away in floods of shame, I’ll never tell how close I came, as I crossed the Holland Road”.
5. Ghosts That We Knew
6. Lover Of The Light
7. Lovers’ Eyes
We originally posted this a year and a half ago. It’s probably changed a bit since then.
Another song with a different name on YouTube (“My Love Don’t Fade Away”). We think it’s the same song mainly because of the lyric “A constant reminder of where I can find her”. Time will tell.
9. Hopeless Wanderer
10. Broken Crown
This video was apparently taken on the same day this song was written.
11. Below My Feet
12. Not With Haste
And so the album finishes the same way it starts – with a track we can’t find a video for. Bring on the 21st September.
