NPR to Stream Newport Folk Festival Again in 2012

Every year I make the vow to one day make it to the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island, USA. As a lover of folk music attending would be a pilgrimage of sorts with the folk festival regarded as one of the best in the world (and also the place where Dylan went electric). And every year I look at the lineup and think “damn, I wish this was the year I was going” because every year it simply blows me away.

And while I won’t be going to Newport in 2012 those of us stuck in the Australian winter can still experience the whole thing thanks to the wonder of the internet. For the fifth straight year NPR Music will be streaming some of the most anticipated sets from the Newport Folk Festival live on the 27th, 28th and 29th of July. Starting with Wilco and winding their way to Sara Watkins, NPR Music has picked the best of the best this year for their broadcast.

The full list of artists is too big to print here but we can tell you we’re hotly anticipating listening to Megafaun, My Morning Jacket, Dawes, Iron & Wine, Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, First Aid Kit, Jackson Browne, Conor Oberst, Punch Brothers, The Tallest Man On Earth, The Head And The Heart and Trampled By Turtles, just to name a few. And remember there’s a 14 hour time difference between the east coast of Australia and Newport meaning you’ll catch most of the evening acts in the middle of our day.

Head to NPR Music to check out the full lineup for the broadcast and get all the streaming details.

And then next year? Maybe we’ll make it to Newport
