Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy Announces New Album “Wolfroy Goes To Town”

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, otherwise known as Will Oldham, has been one of our generation’s greatest contributors to folk music. In 30 years time, people will be searching and searching through stacks of dusty old records for Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy albums.

Oldham has announced the release of his newest album Wolfroy Goes To Town, which will be his 12th album released under his current moniker (being previously known as Palace Brothers, Palace Music etc) on the 4th of October this year. As per usual, Oldham has teamed up with an army of contributers, including the familiar Emmett Kelly. The track listing is as follows;

01 No Match
02 New Whaling
03 Time to Be Clear
04 New Tibet
05 Black Captain
06 Cows
07 There Will Be Spring
08 Quail and Dumplings
09 We Are Unhappy
10 Night Noises

Stream Mason Jennings’ “Minnesota”

The streams just keep coming in this morning. Next in line on your playlist is Hawaiian-born Mason Jennings‘ upcoming album Minnesota.

Whilst Jennings‘ popularity originally came from a coastal, surf-pop audience, listening to the stream of this new album I can barely hear a hint of the island feelgoodery you’d expect from music associated with surfing. Although catchy, this album is filled with moody, jazzy sounds- sitting comfortably somewhere between Rufus Wainwright and Jack Johnson. Jennings has become somewhat of an accomplished artist over the years, and this record, his 9th, goes a long way towards proving it.

Stream A.A. Bondy’s Forthcoming Album “Believers”

American alt-folk legend A.A. Bondy will be releasing  his third album Believers this September on Fat Possum Records. We’ve been hearing good things about the album, and after a listen to NPR’s exlusive stream of the record, I have to say that the hype is to be believed.

Elliott BROOD Announce New Album “Days Into Years”

There’s no other band quite like Canada’s 3-piece death-folk outfit Elliott BROOD. Taking folk’s precarious link with punk to another level, Elliott BROOD often combine the intensity of the heavier end of the punk spectrum (particularly vocally) with traditional instrumentation and melodic arrangements.

Elliott BROOD‘s records have been growing increasingly outstanding with each release, culminating in 2008′s Mountain Meadows. One can only hope that this next record titled Days Into Years, which will be released on the 27th of September by Paper Bags Records, will follow suit and be equally well bequeathed with gems. Paper Bag Records are pre-selling the new album at the moment (via this link). Some personal advice- preorder Cuff The Duke’s new pre-selling album from this small Canadian label while you’re at it ( and save on postage!).

To get a bit of an idea what the new record will sound like, have a listen to the “Northern Air” below. “Banjo Song” is particularly Timber & Steelin’ (a new term that I recently coined to describe music that typifies T&S), but it doesn’t appear to have made the album cut according to the tracklisting (below). Also head to the Paper Bag Records Facebook page to download a new song “If I Get Old”.

  3. If I Get Old
  4. Hold You
  5. Will They Bury Us?

Feist has been around the block a few times, there’s no denying it- but it wasn’t until her most recent 2007 album The Reminder that the Canadian songstress finally started to pick up the acolades she deserves. Needless to say, the world’s been patiently waiting for her next body of work to surface- right up until this week when she announced the upcoming release of her new album Metals.  The album will be released on October 4th. Free Download: Unreleased Radical Face Song “We’re On Our Way” (+ “The Roots” Details)

The date for Ben Cooper’s (aka Radical Face) long awaited sophomore album release has finally been announced (October 4th) alongside news of Cooper‘s plan to release The Family Tree; The Roots independently under another kick-ass moniker, “Bear Machine Records”. Excitingly, Cooper has also recently joined forces with Coda Booking Agency, who handle the likes of  Beirut, Calexico, Deer Tick, Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, The Acorn, Vetiver, William Elliott Whitmore and many, many more Timber & Steel favourites, so hopefully this gives Cooper the opportunity to get out a bit more and share his new music with punters in all corners of the globe in a live format.

“We’re On Our Way” (below) is not one of the tracks set to be on the new album according to the tracklisting (further below), but it sure is sweet.

If you’re super interested to get a taste of the new album, have a listen to the mixtape below from Buzzbands. This is the only place I’ve been able to find the brilliant new album track “A Pound of Flesh’ which is the second song included in this inconveniently single-track podcast which starts just about here                                                 v

Traveller & Fortune Launching New Release This Sunday 7/8/11 at The Jade Monkey, Adelaide

Image courtesy of Traveller & Fortune

Who?: Traveller & Fortune supported by Ryan Meeking
What?: Launching a new 5 track release
Where?: The Jade Monkey, Twin St, Adelaide
When?: 7:00-10:30pm this Sunday 7/8/11
How Much?: $15 on the door, including CD and goodies

Regular Timber & Steel readers have probably seen the name Traveller & Fortune kicking around our regular online stomping grounds at some point. There’s no denying it- we’ve got high hopes for Tom & Jayne West (no relation, as far as I know…), both in their solo endeavours and with their talented band of Adelaide gals. We’ve seen their performances and songwriting grow over the years to the point to where they are now consistently putting on the greatest folk-pop shows in South Australia.

We heard a whisper a while ago that Tom West would be releasing his debut solo album later in the year, so we were very pleasantly surprised to learn that the full team will be putting out a new collection of songs that were recorded in a live session format at Adelaide’s Chapel Studios (and if you’ve ever seen T&F live, you’d know that this won’t get in the way of quality at all). Tom West himself has said to “expect lots of moody instrumentals and lush harmonies”, which has got us eagerly anticipating the back-up to their debut self titled release (follow this link for our review).  The release will only be available at the launch, but if you can’t be there on the night (interstate, committed elsewhere, working, etc), shoot a quick email to travellerandfortune@gmail.com to get a copy sent to you.

The launch begins at 7:00pm on Sunday night and should be wrapped up by 10:30pm, in consideration of the working folks. All attendees will receive a copy of the record and some other goodies upon entry which will cost you $15 on the door; very thrifty considering that Melbourne’s Ryan Meeking is making the trip all the way over to play support on the night. The show will be the last full-band event for a while due to some overseas departures of members, but Tom West (whom recently opened for the Panics) and Jayne West will remain out there gigging and playing your favourite Traveller & Fortune songs. As per usual, we’ll keep you up to date.

Jens Lekman Announces New EP “An Argument With Myself”

Just after catching wind of Loney Dear’s new album announcement this morning, another long awaited release from Emil’s fellow Swedish countryman Jens Lekman came to light. It’s not the album everyone’s been waiting for, but it’s the next best thing. The pastey crooner’s first release since 2007′s Night Falls Over Kortedala will take the form of a 5 track bridging EP titled An Argument With Myself. The songs on the EP are pieces Lekman‘s been playing live for a while- he explained; ” They seemed to be the songs that people enjoyed the most when I played them live, so I decided that they belonged together on an EP, sort of like a little taste of what’s not to come.” The EP will be released on the 20th of September. Track listing is as follows- (you should be able to find live versions of most of the songs on Youtube);

1. An Argument with Myself
2. Waiting for Kirsten
3. A Promise
4. New Directions
5. So This Guy at My Office
