By all accounts Folk Club’s move to its new home at the Oxford Art Factory’s Gallery Bar las week was a resounding success. The night saw a surprise performance from Jack Carty with Folk Club organisers The Falls, the debut of Emma Swift as the hostess with the mostess and a headline spot from Boy Outside which is still being talked about. Don’t believe us? Check out this video from the night:

Due to the recent change in venues the Folk Club crew are still hammering out their upcoming lineups for upcoming Wednesday nights which means we’re only getting announcements a week at a time. And this week? Well does Folk Club have a show for you.

Headlining this Wednesday the 23rd May is The Maple Trail. Fresh from the launch of his new album Cable Mountain Warning at The Vanguard (review here), Aiden Roberts will be donning his folk hat once again for a very rare performance. And it’s all free!

Joining The Maple Trail will be The Falls and Johnny Took. Entry is free and the Oxford Art Factory is offering up a bunch of great drink deals. For more information check out the official Facebook invitation here. See you there?

Sydney’s Folk Club Finds a New Home

Folk Club

The past couple of weeks have been an absolute rollercoaster for The Falls. Just days after releasing their new single and video “Home”, being interviewed for this very blog and hitting the road as support for Jack Carty’s album launch tour the Sydney duo were greeted with the news that their highly successful residency at the Hotel Hollywood, Folk Club, was to be canceled.

Urgent e-mails and Facebook messages were sent letting anyone heading down to Folk Club know that it wasn’t on. Emergency venues were sought and the local indie-folk community rallied with many a suggestion and offer to pull a few favours. No one wanted to see Folk Club die.

It’s now two weeks later and two Wednesday’s without the sweet acoustic sounds of Sydney’s best and brightest filling our ears and we can now confirm that Folk Club is back this week – better than ever!

The new home for Folk Club will be Gallery Bar at the iconic Oxford Art Factory in Darlinghurst, Sydney. This week the music kicks off at 8pm with Jeb & Dep, followed by The Falls (of course) with the headline spot this week going to Boy Outside. Emma Swift (of FBi’s In The Pines) will be on hand for the interview section of the night and we’re told the OAF will be putting on super cheap drink specials.

As always the night is free – we’ll bring you details of upcoming Folk Clubs as soon as we have them. For more info heck out the official facebook invite for the event here. Welcome back Folk Club – we’ve missed you!

Wed 16th May – Boy Outside + The Falls + Jeb & Dep

New Weekly Sydney Folk Club “Bush Bash”

The latest in a long list of new folk clubs and folk nights springing up all over Sydney is Bush Bash upstairs at the Imperial Hotel in Paddington on Wednesday nights. With a focus on “Australian bush songs, ballads, city ditties, yarns, recitations and bush dance tunes” Bush Bash definitely leans towards the traditional end of the folk spectrum.

The host for the night is the legendary Warren Fahey with his mates The Larrikins and The Australian Bush Orchestra in house band mode. There will be open mic sessions at each night and a weekly “bar stool chat” sponsored by Little Creatures. Bush Bash kicks off on the 23rd of may – doors open at 7:30pm with the music kicking off at 8pm – and admission is free.

Singing at a pub on a Wednesday night? Sounds like the perfect way to get in touch with the tradition to us!

MoFo Announces Two Shows in May

Chaika

Things were looking worrying for a moment there. MoFo, the monthly Sydney new-folk orientated night supported by the NSW Folk Federation, originally planned their May show for this Friday until one of the bands had to pull out due to other commitments. We thought they might cancel or at least try and reschedule. But instead they’ve announced not one but two nights of folk in Sydney in the next couple of weeks.

The MoFo show this Friday 11th May is going ahead as originally planned, upstairs at The Gaelic Club in Surry Hills, Sydney. On the bill will be two members of the new group Folklore, fresh from the Glen Innes Celtic Festival and the irrepressible abori: front man Steven Barnard in full solo mode.

Then next Wednesday 16th May MoFo will descend upon legendary Sydney venue The Basement in Circular quay for a night of rip-roaringly good music from bluegrass masters The Lurkers and the gypsy-jazz-folk fusion of Chaika (above).

The nights are each $20 on the door (with some concessions and packages available) and you can get more information via Facebook: Gaelic Club details here and Basement details here. Get out there and support live and local Australia folk music!

O Brother Where Art Thou? Tribute Announces Second Show

O Brother Where Art Thou

If you were lucky enough to be one of the special few who managed to snaffle tickets to last week’s sold out O Brother Where Art Thou? tribute concert at The Vanguard in Sydney last week you’ll know just how amazing it was. We were there (as punters rather than in any media capacity) and the overwhelming consensus in the room was that Sydney needs more bluegrass gigs like this.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the show the organisers have decided to do it all again this week. House band Bellyache Ben & The Steamgrass Boys will be joined by Christa Hughes (Machine Gun Fellatio), Elana Stone (Rescue Ships), Brian Campeau (Rescue Ships), George Washingmachine and some special guests that may just include some of Australia’s top bluegrass players who may happen to be in town for their own gig (work that one out for yourself). It will all be going down this Thursday 19th April with tickets available here.

Upstairs & Underground, 24th March: General Pants & The Privates, Get Folked, ILUKA

ILUKA

It’s nice to see The Gaelic Club in Sydney’s Surrey Hills (not to be confused with the Gaelic Hotel below it) is really starting to get some traction as a live music venue with a bunch of high profile acts and regular nights taking up residence there. A lot of this success has to come down to the folks behind Upstairs & Underground, the Gaelic’s regular night with a focus on getting a younger crowd through the door.

The next Upstairs & Underground for folk and acoustic fans to get excited about is happening in a few weeks on the 24th March. For just $10 you can see the jazz-folk stylings of ILUKA (above), the trad-fushion assault that is Get Folked and the anything-goes of General Pants & The Privates. The show starts at 8pm at The Gaelic Club (on the 1st floor). For further details check out the official Facebook event.

The Falls Present Folk Club

Folk Club

2011 was quite a big year for Sydney duo The Falls taking on the local music scene with their residency at The Hotel Hollywood, turning it into the city’s must-see live show each and every Wednesday night. And with 2012 well and truly underway fans of live and acoustic music are in for a treat as Wednesday’s at the Hollywood takes the next step in its evolution and becomes Folk Club.

The first rule of Folk Club is you don’t talk about Folk Club.

Well, actually, that’s not true. You should talk about Folk Club. You should get a big group of your friends together and get along, it’s going to be fantastic.

The bare bones of Wednesday Nights at the Hollywood are still there. Folk Club is still on on Wednesday nights and it’s still on at The Hotel Hollywood in Sydney’s Surry Hills. And The Falls will still be performing a set each and every week along with two other very talented artists.

But that’s where things start to get a little different. Each week there will be a “feature artist” (usually the artist chosen to perform the final set) who will be interviewed during their show by the night’s host, local actor Jason Crewes. This part of the show will be filmed and the audio recorded to be later turned into online videos and a Folk Club podcast. As the year progresses the online content from the shows will no doubt adapt and change but you’ll need to down at The Hollywood every Wednesday if you want to brag to your friends that you were there.

All sounds pretty exciting right? Now all you need is the information like where, when and who is first?

2012 is going to kick off this Wednesday 29th February with The Falls, Boy Outside and The Merri Creek Pickers. But the official launch of Folk Club is actually Wednesday 7th March which you should definitely get down to – Jack Carty and Jordan Lesser will be there. The March lineup (so far) is below:

Wed 7th March – Jack Carty + The Falls + Jordan Lesser
Wed 14th March – Maples + The Falls + Luke Webb
Wed 21st March – Little Bastards + The Falls + TBA
Wed 28th March – Patrick James + The Falls + TBA

For more information check out the official Folk Club Facebook page. And while you’re there friend The Falls so you get double to updates. And of course keep tuned to Timber and Steel where we’ll update you on all things Folk Club related.

“Man, I see in Folk Club the strongest and smartest musicians who’ve ever lived” – Tyler Durden
