We can point to a couple of key moments that led to the founding of Timber and Steel. One was seeing Marcus Mumford support Laura Marling at the Factory Theatre in 2008 before anyone had even heard of Mumford and Sons. Another was attending folk festivals throughout 2009 and realising that no one at them seemed to be playing the kind of folk music we were listening to. And finally there was the launch of Communion Australia in Sydney, early 2010 featuring Matt Corby, Boy and Bear, Pete Roe, Sherlock’s Daughter and WIM that tipped us over the edge and made us realise that somebody needed to be writing about this amazing music.
Sadly Communion Australia seemed to disappear after only 3 outings and while Communion’s return to our shores has been hinted at by founders Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons), Kevin Jones (Bear’s Den/Cherbourg) and Ian Grimble it’s not been until now that we can confirm it’s triumphant return.
Communion Melbourne will be kicking off on the 22nd July at The Toff in Town. At the moment they’re being coy about the lineup but the Communion Weekly newsletter let slip last night that Timber and Steel favourites The Tiger and Me would be making an appearance. Tickets are already on sale for the night here and you can get more information from the Communion Melbourne Facebook page. Here’s hoping it’s a success and we see the night makes it to other cities around the country.
