Spotlight On: Hobo Bordeaux

The Hobo Bordeaux boys have been developing quite the groundswell of support in their home town of Sydney. Appearing at a variety of gigs and festivals, their style is a lively and enigmatic, almost cabaret style, drawn from strange rambling ideas “treated with whiskey soaked bandages and chewing tobacco” or so their bio says. I have had the pleasure of seeing them live only once, last year. Their stage show was terrific and fun all round, drawing audiences in through their stylish threads and enthusiastic performance. Listening to their latest single “Dress Shoes” from their brand new EP Gunslingin’ Ways the band has certainly matured their sound which will have you swaying and tapping your foot, in fact it’s not too far from the kind of tune you’d expect to hear in a Tarantino movie. While they don’t fit neatly into any one genre, they like to tout their music as ‘clunky-cuban-swamp-blues-spaghetti-soul-western’ sound, which kind of does cover off all their sounds in one mouthful of a definition.

Their new EP was launched this past weekend in Sydney and was well received by the crowd. The band also gave the lucky audience a treat with the first ever showing of their film clip to “Dress Shoes” but you’ll have to wait a little longer to see it as the band will keep it under wraps for a few more weeks yet. With a bright future ahead of them, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them in the future supporting the likes of Mojo Juju, the Snowdroppers, Lolo Lovina, Lanie Lane and maybe one day they’ll land that ellusive soundtrack deal with Quentin himself.
